CBD is the key compound found in hemp. It along with other active cannabinoids like CBG, CBC and CBDV are the active components that play a role in how hemp can beneficially affect the body, and unlike THC, it’s non-psychoactive. So how does it work? It uses your endocannabinoid system, which is composed of receptors that are spread throughout the brain and body. There are two main receptors you’ll want to know, the CB1 (it works with the brain and its functions) and the CB2 (which works with the body and its functions). Some cannabinoids will directly activate these receptors, while others will have both direct and indirect stimulation to them.

Your body’s cannabinoid receptors are involved in a multitude of processes inside the human body. Everything from regulating your mood to pain sensation, cannabinoids play a role. These receptors are activated by the endocannabinoids your body naturally produces, as well as by phytocannabinoids, which are produced by Hemp and other plants.

The CB1 receptor the majority of these receptors are found in the central nervous system, but you do have some of these receptors in much smaller number found in the liver, kidneys and lungs. The CB1 receptors play a role in the production and release of neurotransmitters, are involved in the lipogenesis process that takes place inside the liver, maintenance of homeostasis, concentration, appetite, memory and pain tolerance.

The CB2 receptor these receptors are part of your body’s immune system, they are found throughout the body, as well as, in the hematopoietic blood cells. CB2 receptors are involved in a variety of functions like immune suppression or apoptosis, they modulate pain sensation & play a role in various diseases, from liver and kidney problems to neurodegenerative diseases.

How does cbd work inside your body? CBD is one of the cannabinoids that works in a more indirect way with the CB1 and CB2 receptors. It does have some direct effect, but it activates other receptors, like the vanilloid, adenosine and serotonin receptors. Here’s some examples: CBD will activate the TRPV1 receptor, thus playing a role in the mediation of body temperature, pain perception & inflammation. When it activates your adenosine receptors it produces the anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory effects. Adenosine receptors are also involved in the release of dopamine (which aids with cognition, motor control, motivation & reward mechanisms) and glutamate (which is involved in memory, learning and cognition). When CBD activates the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor, it exerts anti-depressant effects, pain perception, appetite, nausea, anxiety, sleep and addiction mechanisms. CBD will also block GPR55 signaling, decreasing bone re-absorption & cancer cell proliferation. GPR55 is widely present in the brain and linked with the modulation of bone density and blood pressure.
Alcohol vs. CO₂ extraction Carbon dioxide is a liquid gas and only extracts the non-polar chemicals of a plant. Alcohol is a solvent that is made due to plant fermentation and is a byproduct of plants themselves. Alcohol is also the only solvent that maintains the original chemical ratios contained in the plant. This is due to alcohol extracting both water soluble & oil soluble components. The use of carbon dioxide results in a very limited extraction of the plant. Since the extracts of carbon dioxide are non-polar; carbon dioxide extracts are not water-soluble. This plays a vital role in bio-availability. Since our bodies are 70% water, oils must be digested by different acids and enzymes to become active. During this digestion process, the active ingredients of the oils are degraded.

Terpenes are organic compounds that are found in plants & their essential oils. Hemp is exceptionally rich in terpenes, its these highly fragrant components that give hemp its unique scent and taste qualities. Most importantly, they interact synergistically with cannabinoids to increase their function and activity within the body.

CBC increases levels of the body’s natural endocannabinoids, like anandamide, by inhibiting their uptake, thus allowing them to remain longer in the bloodstream. It binds with receptors in the body, such as the vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1) and transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), both of which are linked to pain perception. CBC is the 2nd most potent cannabinoid at inhibiting the growth of new cancer cells. It has a positive effect on neural stem progenitor cells, which are essential to healthy brain function. CBC may provide relief from stress, inflammation, and toxicity that create neurological diseases & brain pathologies. CBC is also a powerful inhibitor of acne.
CBG has strong anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial to those with IBD, Ulcerative colitis & Crohn’s. Its strong neuroprotective properties may prove to be helpful for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Fibromyalgia. CBG’s anti-tumor benefits may aid in cancer treatments because CBG was shown to block receptors that cause cancer cell growth. CBG is thought to be particularly effective in treating glaucoma because it reduces intraocular pressure and is a powerful vasodilator. There is also anti-depressant and anti-anxiety qualities CBG has that makes it useful for treating those conditions.
CBDV has shown to act as an inhibitor for the neural activity that triggers an epileptic seizure by activating and desensitizing the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channels in vitro. The TRPV1 is a particular receptor in the human body known to detect and regulate body temperature as well as produce pain sensations. CBDV reduced both the intensity and duration of the epileptic bursts by essentially desensitizing TRPV1 receptors. Besides its anticonvulsant effects, CBDV has also been shown to reduce nausea in rats while increasing appetite, which may greatly expand the medical potential of this cannabinoid.
